Program Notes
It is our privilege to perform this music for you tonight. While a large part of our program has been a part of the classical canon for generations, the English grouping deserves special attention and context:
We have selected two gorgeous and poignant songs by Dr. Rosephanye Powell, composer and Professor of Voice at Auburn University located in Alabama. Published in 2021, Dr. Powell, utilized the texts of two African American spirituals, Balm in Gilead, and, I Want to Die Easy, and set them to her own music. Healing was written in memory of the Covid-19 pandemic and Dying in remembrance of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2020. More information about this cycle of songs can be found on Dr. Powell’s website http://rosephanyepowell.com/. We are honored to offer the Brazilian premiere of these songs this evening.
We couple the Powell songs with two traditional arrangements of African American spirituals by Henry Thacker Burleigh and Moses Hogan, respectively. The U.S. Library of Congress recognizes the African American spiritual as constituting “one of the largest and most significant forms of American folksong.” Spirituals are the folk songs created by enslaved Africans after their arrival in North America between 1619 and 1860. Although the enslavement of people in America ended with President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect January 1, 1863, enslaved Black people in Texas did not receive the notice until over two years later on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth began as a local celebration of Black liberation in Galveston, Texas and was first recognized as a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. In 2022, Juneteenth will be celebrated in America on June 20th. In presenting this music, we honor the lives of Black people enslaved in the Americas, of their ancestors’ and their descendants’ impact on culture, work, and institutions at every level. As musicians, we continue to acknowledge the unique cultural, intellectual, and social contributions of Black people who have endured the impact of direct and structural violence through generations past and present.

Para nós é um privilégio nos apresentarmos para vocês esta noite! A maior parte do programa deste recital faz parte do cânone clássico por muitas gerações, mas as peças em inglês merecem uma atenção especial. Selecionamos duas canções lindas e comoventes da Dra. Rosephanye Powell, compositora e professora de Canto na Universidade de Auburn, no Estado do Alabama, nos Estados Unidos da América. Publicadas em 2021, a Dra. Powell utilizou dois spirituals afro-americanos, Balm in Gilead (Bálsamo em Gileade) e I Want to Die Easy (Eu quero uma morte tranquila), e fez os arranjos para as suas canções. A canção Healing (Curando) foi escrita em memória da pandemia do Covid-19. A canção Dying (Morrendo) é uma lembrança da morte de George Floyd, em Minneapolis, no Estado de Minnesota, em 2020. Nós juntamos as canções da Dra Powell com os dois arranjos tradicionais de spirituals afro-americanos dos compositores Henry Thacker Burleigh e Moses Hogan, respectivamente. A biblioteca do Congresso Norte-americano reconhece que o spiritual afro-americano constitui uma das maiores e mais significantes formas das canções folclóricas estadunidenses. Os spirituals são as canções folclóricas criadas pelos africanos escravizados quando eles chegaram na América do Norte, 1619-1860. O presidente Abraham Lincoln assinou a Proclamação da Emancipação que terminou com a escravização de pessoas na América do Norte que entrou em vigor em 1º de janeiro de 1863, mas os escravizados africanos no Estado do Texas só receberam essa alforria dois anos mais tarde, no dia 19 de junho de 1865. A celebração chamada Juneteenth teve início como um evento local da libertação dos africanos na cidade de Galveston, no Estado do Texas, e foi reconhecida como um feriado nacional nos Estados Unidos da América no dia 17 de junho de 2021 quando o Presidente Joe Biden assinou a lei instituindo o Juneteenth National Independence Day. Em 2022, Juneteenth será celebrado no dia 20 de junho. Então, a apresentação desta música é uma forma de homenagear e honrar as vidas dos afro-americanos, dos seus ancestrais e seus descendentes com a sua valiosa contribuição na formação da cultura, do trabalho e das instituições em cada uma de suas dimensões. Nós, como musicistas, continuamos a reconhecer a preciosa contribuição cultural, intelectual e social dos afro-americanos que suportaram o impacto direto e estrutural da violência através de gerações passadas e presentes

Susan Williams, soprano and Associate Professor of Voice at The University of Alabama, has been a soloist with numerous orchestras, opera companies, and organizations in the United States and abroad. Most recently she guest lectured at The Royal Irish Academy of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2019, she performed with the President’s Orchestra of Tajikistan through the Pitch Pipe Foundation and gave masterclasses in Kathmandu, Nepal as a grant recipient of the U.S. Embassy. Twice she has toured in Kolkata, India with Kolkata Classics. In 2018 she was a faculty artist with the Bassi Brugnatelli Symposium for Conductors and Singers in Robbiate, Italy. She has traveled to Havana, Cuba three times to teach and perform as part of The University of Alabama Center for Cuba Collaboration and Scholarship. Interested in how body movement systems and virtual anatomy technology can assist in singing, she is a registered yoga teacher at the 200-hour level with an additional 100-hour training in yogic breathwork; her publications can be found in the Journal of Singing. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Pianist Jennifer Heemstra is a high impact performer who has left her mark on classical music, education and underserved communities around the world. She has performed at venues, to include the Kala Mandir (Kolkata, India), Smithsonian National Museum (D.C.), Jazz Conservatory (Kathmandu, Nepal), Aini Opera and Ballet Theatre (Dushanbe, Tajikistan), and the American University (Sharjah, UAE). Heemstra founded two nonprofits, Kolkata Classics in India and the Pitch Pipe Foundation in Michigan, USA. To date Heemstra has organized and performed in over 100 concerts in India, has successfully organized 72 cultural events in the USA and 56 events in the Middle East & Central Asia. Heemstra is expanding her international concert series to Brazil to provide free concerts for the public, master classes for young musicians and social services for those in need. Heemstra worked as a Lecturer at Case Western Reserve University (USA), was the Commencement Speaker for Michigan State University and was a delegate at the Second World Congress Against the Sexual Exploitation of Women & Girls. She earned her Master of Music from The Cleveland Institute of Music and a Bachelor of Music with honours from Michigan State University.
Manuela Tomaz Korossy began her studies in music in 2005, in an extension course at the University of Brasília and soon joined the Escola de Música de Brasília, to study classical piano, where she also participated in choral singing activities. After graduating from the basic classical piano course, she began her studies in Classical Singing at the same institution, with Professor Vilma Bittencourt, in 2016. In 2017 she joined the Voice Bachelor at the University of Brasília and in 2018 she became a student of Professor Franklin Sagredo Martins (Brazil-Belgium). During her studies, she had the opportunity to do masterclasses with singers of national and international renown, such as Mezzo Edineia Oliveira (SP-Brazil) and Soprano Rachel Willis Sorensen (USA), and she also performed as a soloist, twice, with Orchestra of the Cláudio Santoro National Theater, conducted by maestro Claudio Cohen. In 2021, she was accepted into the Voice Bachelor at the Juilliard School, where she will complete her studies.
Isabel Quintela, soprano, has a master’s degree in Voice Performance at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She graduated in music education at the Universidade de Brasília and in classical singing in the Musical School of Brasília. She performed in the Role of Alice in Falstaff, Pamina in the Opera The Magic Flute, and also in the operas La Clemenza di Tito as Servilia, Le nozze di Figaro as Barbarina and Amahl and the Night Visitors as the Mother. As a soloist, she performed in pieces like Gott ist mein König, The Armed Man, Messiah, Carmina Burana, Leçons de Tenèbre, Magnifcat from C.P.E Bach and others.

Susan Williams, soprano e Professora Associada de Voz na Universidade do Alabama, tem sido solista de várias orquestras, companhias de ópera e organizações nos Estados Unidos e no exterior. Mais recentemente, lecionou na Royal Irish Academy of Music e no Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Em 2019, apresentou-se com a Orquestra do Presidente do Tajiquistão, através da Pitch Pipe Foundation e deu masterclasses em Kathmandu (Nepal) como bolsista da Embaixada dos EUA. Excursionou por duas vezes em Kolkata, Índia com o projeto Kolkata Classics. Em 2018, foi artista do corpo docente do Simpósio Bassi Brugnatelli para Maestros e Cantores em Robbiate (Itália). Esteve já três vezes em Havana (Cuba), para ensinar e se apresentar como integrante do Centro de Colaboração e Bolsa de Estudo da Universidade do Alabama. Interessada em como os sistemas de movimento corporal e a tecnologia de anatomia virtual podem ajudar no canto, estudou ioga e é professora registrada, com 200 horas de estudos e treinamento adicional de 100 horas em respiração iogue. Suas publicações podem ser encontradas no Journal of Singing. É Doutora em Artes Musicais pelo Cleveland Institute of Music.
Jennifer Heemstra é pianista e uma artista de relevante atuação social, que deixou sua marca na música clássica e na educação de comunidades carentes em várias partes do mundo. Já se apresentou em locais como o Kala Mandir (Kolkata, Índia), Smithsonian National Museum (D.C.), Jazz Conservatory (Kathmandu, Nepal), Aini Opera and Ballet Theatre (Dushanbe, Tajiquistão) e a American University (Sharjah, Emirados Árabes Unidos). Heemstra fundou duas organizações sem fins lucrativos, a Kolkata Classics na Índia e a Pitch Pipe Foundation em Michigan, EUA. Organizou concertos e se apresentou em mais de cem eventos na Índia, setenta e dois eventos culturais nos EUA e cinquenta e seis eventos no Oriente Médio e Ásia Central. Agora está expandindo sua série de concertos internacionais para o Brasil, visando oferecer concertos gratuitos para o público, master classes para jovens músicos e serviços sociais para pessoas carentes. Heemstra trabalhou como conferencista na Case Western Reserve University (EUA), foi a oradora inicial da Michigan State University e foi delegada no Segundo Congresso Mundial Contra a Exploração Sexual de Mulheres e Meninas em Deli, Índia. Obteve seu Mestrado em Música pelo Instituto de Música de Cleveland (The Cleveland Institute of Music) e Bacharelado em Música com honras pela Universidade Estadual de Michigan (Michigan State University).
Manuela Korossy iniciou seus estudos em música em 2005, em um curso de extensão da Universidade de Brasília e logo ingressou na Escola de Música de Brasília, para estudar piano erudito, onde também participou de atividades de canto coral. Após graduar-se no curso básico de piano erudito, iniciou seus estudos em Canto Erudito pela mesma instituição, com a professora Vilma Bittencourt, em 2016. Em 2017 ingressou no Bacharelado em canto pela Universidade de Brasília e em 2018 tornou-se aluna do professor Franklin Sagredo Martins (Brasil-Bélgica). Durante seus estudos, teve a oportunidade de fazer masterclasses com cantores de renome nacional e internacional, como a Mezzo Edineia Oliveira (SP-Brasil) e a Soprano Rachel Willis Sorensen (EUA), além de atuar como solista, por duas vezes, junto a Orquestra do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro, sob a regência do maestro Claudio Cohen. Em 2021, foi aceita no curso de bacharelado em voz na Juilliard School, onde concluirá seus estudos.
Isabel Quintela, soprano, possui mestrado em Performance Vocal pela Univesidade do Missouri, Columbia, Estados Unidos. Formou-se em licenciatura em música pela Universidade de Brasília e em Canto Erudito pela Escola de Música de Brasília. Atuou nos papéis de Alice, na ópera Falstaff; Pamina, em A Flauta Mágica; Servilia, em Clemenza di Tito; Barbarina, em Le nozze di Figaro e como a Mãe na ópera natalina Amahl and the Night Visitors. Como solista, performou peças como Gott ist mein König; The Armed Man; Messiah; Carmina Burana; Leçons de Tenèbre; Magnifcat de C.P.E Bach e outras.
